After Midnight: Denver Heroes # 1
Perfect for fans of Nora Roberts and Karen Robards, Kathy Clark’s suspenseful, seductive Denver Heroes series kicks off as a dedicated cop and a beautiful actress get wrapped up in a world of danger and desire.

Aside from the reporter riding along in the passenger seat of his cruiser, it’s a typical Saturday night on the job for Sam Morgan of the Denver Police Department. Then shots ring out, and a routine stop involving a pimp and a hooker spirals into senseless violence. Now Sam is lying in a hospital bed, haunted by fleeting memories of the stunning blonde who saved his life—and then just disappeared.

Kate McKinney was hired to play a prostitute on a reality-TV show, not stand around as actual bullets start flying. Unable to shake the feeling that trouble is stalking her, Kate turns to the only man she can trust: the wounded cop whose blue eyes send chills through her body. He doesn’t believe she was just playing a role, but the predator hiding in the shadows is all too real—and, as Sam and Kate edge closer to the truth, so is the heat that ignites between them.

Cries in the Night: Denver Heroes # 2
Fans of Nora Roberts and Karen Robards will love this pulse-pounding novel of romantic suspense, as a red-hot firefighter reaches out to save a courageous beauty from the terrors of the night.

As a victim’s advocate for the Denver Police Department, Julie Lawrence is always on call for survivors of abuse, fighting for the justice she never got for herself. It’s a high-risk job that makes a lot of enemies—one of whom seems to be now targeting Julie. But teaming up with firefighter and local hero Rusty Wilson sparks a different kind of danger. As Julie surrenders to intoxicating passion, she finds herself breaking her own rules, caring about Rusty in a way she thought she’d sworn off forever.

When a domestic incident escalates into a deadly hostage crisis, Rusty is willing to risk everything to protect those who really need his help—like Julie, the breath of fresh air who fills his days with purpose and his nights with pleasure. He just hopes he’s not too late to stop a chillingly orchestrated act of payback that puts the woman he loves at the mercy of a madman’s rage.

Excerpt 1

Kate leaned against the closed door of her apartment, then whirled around and scrambled to lock all three locks. Her fingers were trembling so violently, it took several seconds to get the safety chain into its small round hole. Her first impulse was to crawl into bed, pull the covers over her head, curl into a ball, and not move for at least a week. If she was lucky, this would all be an awful nightmare, and at any moment, she would wake up and everything would be just as it had been several hours ago. Back to the worries about coming up with the rent, getting a good long-term job, having enough extra money to get the brakes on her car fixed and maybe even being able to afford a new pair of shoes.

But tonight Kate wasn’t so lucky.

She glanced down at her hands and realized they were splattered with dried brownish-red spots. Blood. She pressed her lips together and struggled to swallow the rush of bile that suddenly filled her throat. With increasing panic, she saw there were more dark red splotches all over the front of her tube top and skirt and even on the bare skin of her shoulders and chest.

Oh God, she had to get them off. Frantically, she clawed at the fastener of the skirt and yanked it off. She peeled off the tube top and dropped it on top of the skirt and added her shoes to the pile.

Finally, she pulled off the long blond wig and tossed it on a chair.

Wearing only black bikini panties and a black strapless bra, she hugged herself, trying to stop the shivering that had wracked her ever since the first shots were fired. Her jaws ached from being clenched for so long. She needed a shower—a long, hot shower to wash away the blood and the horror and the death.

Kate crossed the room that served as a combination living/dining room with a kitchenette blocked off in one corner by a folding screen. Small, run-down, yet barely affordable, her apartment had, nevertheless, been her cozy hideaway . . . until now. Even with all the blinds closed, her drapes pulled, and the door locked, she still felt vulnerable and alone. At any second there could be a knock on the door from the police. She wasn’t ready. Not yet.

Kate knew she shouldn’t have run away. It wasn’t even a conscious thought as much as an instinctive reaction to flee. When she heard the sirens, she knew help was near, and there was nothing she could do for any of the men lying on the sidewalk. She melted into the growing ring of curious bystanders and watched the emergency activity. As more and more people arrived, she had slid farther into the background until she just stepped away and disappeared into the night. Sooner or later she would have to talk to the police. Later seemed to be the better plan.

She entered the bathroom and turned on the shower. It would take at least five minutes for the hot water to reach her second-floor pipes, so she finished undressing while it ran. Her fingers fumbled as she took off her left earring, then reached for the right one. Touching the empty lobe of her ear, she sighed. Damn! The sparkling crystal hoops had been her favorite pair. She stepped out of her panties, then unhooked her bra. As she tossed it on the bed, a hundred-dollar bill fluttered to the floor.

She blinked and stared at the crumpled bill for a few seconds without moving. Jameel had given it to her earlier in the evening, and because she hadn’t brought a purse, she’d tucked it into the cup of her bra. In all the excitement, she’d completely forgotten about it. Stepping over it as if it were a poisonous snake, she entered the shower and pulled the curtain closed behind her.

As expected, the water was barely lukewarm, but it still felt good, pouring over her, washing away all the physical reminders of the night. She scrubbed her face and body with a soapy washcloth until her skin felt raw. Even after the water ran cold, she lingered in the protective cell of the tiled shower until she started shivering again. Reluctantly, she turned off the faucets and picked up a towel.

She made a halfhearted attempt to blow-dry her hair, then wrapped a fluffy robe around her naked body. Suddenly overwhelmed by a debilitating exhaustion, she succumbed to her earlier instinct and crawled into bed. With all her lights blazing and her ruined clothes littering the floor, she closed her eyes and willed herself to sleep. As much as she hated to think about it, she knew nothing would change before morning. Sooner or later, she’d have to deal with it all . . . but for the few hours left until dawn, she would try to find peace in the depths of sleep.

REVIEW: Modern Monsters By, Kelley York

Vic Howard never wanted to go to the party. He’s the Invisible Guy at school, a special kind of hell for quiet, nice guys. But because his best friend is as popular as Vic is ignored, he went…

And wished he hadn’t.

Because something happened to a girl that night. Something terrible, unimaginable, and Callie Wheeler’s life will never be the same. Plus, now Callie has told the police that Vic did it. Suddenly, Invisible Vic is painfully visible, on trial both literally, with the police, and figuratively, with the angry and judgmental kids at school. As the whispers and violence escalate, he becomes determined to clear his name, even if it means an uneasy alliance with Callie’s best friend, the beautiful but aloof Autumn Dixon.

But as Autumn and Vic slowly peel back the layers of what happened that night, they realize that while the truth can set him free, it can also shatter everything he thought he knew about his life…

Review

Kelley York is a new author for me. Modern Monsters is her newest young contemporary novel. This is an interesting young adult novel that revolves around a dangerous crime that destroys the life of an innocent teenager. The crime also threatens to snatch his quiet yet successful future he has been working so hard for. Vic now has to take the journey to clear his name and figure out the truth. What he doesn’t know is that the road to clear his name can be a bumpy one.

Vic is an unpopular nerd with a heart of gold. Surprisingly his best friend is the most popular kid in school, so every other weekend he finds himself standing in the corner of every happening party. But one party, one weekend changes his life forever. When he finds a drunk girl throwing up he helps her to a bedroom and tucks her into bed. When Monday comes around he finds out the drunk girl, named Callie, has been raped and the last person she remembers is Vic. After his mother abandons him Vic, with the help of his best friend as well as Callie’s best friend, starts on the hunt to find out the truth and clear his name.

Kelley York creates a mood that is dark and confusing which makes this book an alluring read from the very first chapter. The writing was practically flawless. There were bits and pieces that drew you in and wouldn’t let you go. Vic was a complete nerd but there was a kindness that made you instantly feel for him. The author also handles the very delicate subject in a way that was compassionate. The mystery in this novel went so deep in the beginning it had me completely hooked and unable to figure out who the culprit could be. Once the pieces of the mystery were being revealed it became easier to predict who the real culprit could be. This book was definitely one that was interesting. If you like mystery with some romance thrown in this is definitely one for you!

Excerpt

“I’m meeting a friend who’s seeing the deputy sheriff. Dawn . . .” Christ. He didn’t even know her last name. Par for the course. He usually didn’t care about a woman’s last name when he was buried deep inside her. Or her first name, for that matter. But Dawn wasn’t like the others and he silently berated himself for not making the effort.

“Dawn. No last name.” The receptionist lifted a manicured eyebrow in censure, and Cade scowled.

“Just make the call.”

Five minutes later, accompanied by two suspicious police officers, he walked into the intake area of the sheriff’s office. An assortment of drunks, vagrants, and a few high school girls in cuffs were seated in the waiting area. All the desks were in use, and the air was thick with the stench of unwashed bodies, old cigarettes, and pastrami.

The lead member of his entourage gestured to a desk in the corner where Dawn sat across from a cop with brown hair and the chiselled good looks of those losers on the front of men’s magazines. Cade snorted at the frickin’ gigantic shiny badge on the dude’s blue shirt, but his derision faded when the deputy met Cade’s gaze and then reached over the desk to clasp Dawn’s hand.

A growl escaped Cade’s lips. So that was the game. Bastard thought he could put his hands all over Cade’s girl.

Okay. Technically, she wasn’t his girl. But he’d slept with her, wanted to sleep with her again, and he’d had a good time with her and her kids on Sunday afternoon. Hell, he’d even missed joining Gunner and Sparky at a little pool party with Delilah and the girls from Peelers Strip Club. Now, that was something he would never live down.

His gaze still on Cade, the deputy stroked Dawn’s hand.

How fucking pathetic. Was that his idea of a challenge? Seated at his fucking desk in a collared shirt, patting Dawn’s hand? He’d give anything right now to get the deputy outside in the alley. Pansy ass would go down with one punch. Guaranteed. And the guy was an idiot if he thought he’d rile Cade up enough to risk assaulting a police officer. Not that Cade was afraid of doing time, but he had business to take care of first, and item number one was to get the deputy’s paws off his woman.

“Thought you were done with bikers,” the deputy said, loud enough for Cade to hear. Cade snorted and put more effort into thudding his boots across the tiles and rattling the chain hanging from his belt.

Let the fucking games begin.

“Jax,” I breathed. I reached behind me, grasping for the door handle to my backseat. When it opened, I pulled his face away from my chest. His lips were red from thoroughly kissing me. His chest was heaving and his eyes were glazed. I smiled and tugged on his hand. I climbed inside my car, lying back on the seat. He crawled on top of me and shut the door behind him. Without pause, he helped me out of my light jacket and tossed it in the front. He pulled my shirt over my head and went back to attacking my breasts. I wrapped my arms around him and ran them over his back. He had never been skin and bones, but now he had more definition. He wasn’t too bulky, there was just enough there that my arousal kicked up another five notches.

I pulled on his shirt, whipping it over his head. He smirked at me, taking my bra off.

“Cassie,” he said, his voice reverent and so full of want that it almost hurt to hear it. “Fuck. I never thought I’d be able to touch you, kiss you again. Now that I started, I’m not sure I can ever stop.”

“Don’t stop. Don’t ever stop.”

He leaned down and pulled a nipple into his mouth. I cried out. His hand slid down my abdomen, my muscles twitching as he moved over them. He popped the button of my jeans and slid down the zipper before slipping his hand inside. He traced his finger over my panties. He groaned.

“Fuck, Cassie.” His whole body went still and stiff, his head buried in my neck. “I think I’m going to die. Right here, right now. If I wake up tomorrow and this was a dream, I don’t think I can go on with life.”

“It’s not a dream, Jax. I’m here, with you.”

He regarded me and the pain in his eyes caused my heart to squeeze painfully. It seemed as though he was about to say something, but instead, he devoured my lips and slipped a finger inside me. I arched my back, ripping my lips away from his. The sensation, the feeling, it was so much. Too much.

“God, you feel so good.” He buried his face in my neck again and kissed, licked, nibbled it. My mouth was wide open, as were my eyes, as he moved his fingers inside me magically. I couldn’t think about anything but the feel of his fingers and the way he was playing my body like a guitar. He still knew exactly how to touch me in such a way that, before long, my hips were bucking against his and I screamed out his name.

He slipped his hand out of my jeans, moving up to brush my hair out of my face. He studied my face as though he’d never see it again. My mind was still coming back down to Earth as he helped me put my bra and shirt back on. Before I knew it, he was sitting next to me, pulling his shirt on. He kissed my lips, long and passionate and so amazingly. I wanted his hands on me again, even though they’d been gone only been a few minutes.

“I don’t want to leave you, Cassie, but if I don’t leave now, we’re never leaving this parking lot,” he said, then pressed a kiss to my forehead.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, kissing him. I never wanted this feeling to end.
