REVIEW: Hades (Demonica #11.5) By, Larissa Ione

A fallen angel with a mean streak and a mohawk, Hades has spent thousands of years serving as Jailor of the Underworld. The souls he guards are as evil as they come, but few dare to cross him. All of that changes when a sexy fallen angel infiltrates his prison and unintentionally starts a riot. It’s easy enough to quell an uprising, but for the first time, Hades is torn between delivering justice — bestowing or mercy — on the beautiful female who could be his salvation…or his undoing.

Thanks to her unwitting participation in another angel’s plot to start Armageddon, Cataclysm was kicked out of Heaven and is now a fallen angel in service of Hades’s boss, Azagoth. All she wants is to redeem herself and get back where she belongs. But when she gets trapped in Hades’s prison domain with only the cocky but irresistible Hades to help her, Cat finds that where she belongs might be in the place she least expected…

Review

Hades in any book is someone that is hard to feel anything for. I mean he is the Lord of the Dead. He is the jailor of souls in hell. It takes a special type of book and author for you to actually fall in love with someone like that. Larissa Ione was able to do that. Meeting Hades and Cat in previous books I couldn’t wait for their story and I was disappointed.

Hades was a great character. He is the keeper of souls in Hell and takes direct orders from the Grimm Reaper AKA Azagoth. For centuries he has been in Azagoth’s service even though he has been quite angry with him. Hades is sarcastic, damages, and way too cocky for his own good. I loved his character. He was able to keep his humor and he definitely had some laugh out loud moments. Cat is not a fallen angel working for Azagoth to get back into heaven. She hasn’t managed to do that, she has managed to destroy Azagoth’s home. I really liked her character. Her personality really meshed well with Hades.

Hades and Cat had an interesting relationship. There was running (Hades), seduction (Cat), and lots of witty banter. They also had a chemistry that really jumped off the page. Even though this book was a novella there was a great development with the characters and their relationship. Overall I was really happy with their story!!

ABOUT 21 STOLEN KISSES:

When I first met him I resisted.
Like any forbidden love, I told myself he was a crush, and it would pass.
That was a lie. It never faded.

And I never expected he would fall for me just as hard.

There were so many reasons that should have kept us apart, least of all, the decade that separated us.
Growing up in New York City, I learned early on that love is a double-edged sword.
Love broke up my parents, love took away my friends, and love -- the big, intense, never-been-like-this-beforelove -- landed me in therapy.
Now I'm heading to college, and it's time to give love a clean slate again. But, can I really start over when he's still in my life?
Because the one man I've always wanted, is also the only guy I absolutely can't have…
And he wants me just as fiercely.

Can I settle for anything less than the love of my life?

21 SK - Teaser1

Excerpt:

He inhales sharply. The look in his eyes says we’re crossing into the danger zone again. It’s the only place I want to be with him. Because when we’re there, nothing between us feels dangerous. Everything feels right.

“I turn eighteen in a few more weeks,” I say, like my birthday is an open invitation for us to slam back into each other.

He nods. “I know.”

A breeze blow by and rustles his hair. A lock falls out of place. Instinct takes over. I raise my hand to reach for his hair.

But he’s faster. He grasps my wrist, and the second he does, the moment expands. It stretches and unfolds into the thing I will replay tonight and tomorrow and the next day. I stare at his hand clasped around my wrist, flashing back to all the times he held my hand, touched my wrist, and ran his fingers along my arm. I shiver as the memories collide, the past slamming into the present.

I look up from our hands to his eyes. Blazing, full of heat. Full of all that restraint from him that I know so well.

REVIEW: Ruin of the World (World Without End #4) By, Nazarea Andrews

When the zombies rose, we thought the world ended.

It didn’t—it just broke, in a way we couldn’t fix. And we found ways to continue, reasons to fight.

Faith. Family. Politics. Obsession. The most dangerous of all—hope.

But when all of that is stripped away, and nothing remains but rage and betrayal—that is the true end of the world.

Return to the World Without End, for a final battle for hope and survival in the exciting conclusion to Nazarea Andrews’ phenomenal series.

Review

**WARNING**
This is the fourth and final book in the series, so if you haven’t read the first three read them and then check out my other review J

There is something about the World Without End series that sucks you in and doesn’t let you go. Both of the characters are complex and amazing. They have their frustrating moments, their awful moments, and their beautiful moments. If Finn and Nurrin don’t completely win you over the story will. It’s a story about survival in a time where there is no hope for anyone to see the next morning. It’s action packed and full of the feels that you can’t help but love. This series is probably one of my favorites, with that being said I can’t help but feel a little let down with the ending.

“I don’t know how to move on from this. I don’t know how to let go of the only thing that matters.”

When we left off The Priest was willing to do anything to bring Finn back to the east and he does. Nurrin was bitten and now he has no choice. The opening of the book seems to be a month or so into their fight to take back the east. Finn has his own group and he is only willing to stay as long as Nurrin is ok. Nurrin is now living with the disease she never wanted. While the antidote is working The Priest left out a few very important details and now they are both stuck. Ren and Finn cannot trust anyone and Finn is going to have to face history that he wanted to keep in the past.

“For a moment, I’m a world away, on my back in a bed and the entire world is Finn O’Malley, his hard body braced over mine as he moved inside me, and whispered my name like I was the only thing in the world. That tiny slice of eternity, I could believe it was true, could believe he wanted nothing more than me.”

Finn has always been a complex character. One that has many secrets even from us as the reader. I feel like in this installment we get to see more of a vulnerable side to Finn. He has to deal with so much more than he was ready for. We finally get to see him open up to Ren about his mom, his family, and even a little bit about Kelsey. He finally sees that one thing really does matter and he is that one person for Ren. Nurrin wants nothing more than to save Finn from going back into the east. He lost everything there once and she doesn’t want to be the reason he loses the only thing left, his life. Ren has gone through such a transformation in this series. Her character arc is ending but she got there. She is still the snarky badass she was in the first three books but there is more to her now. She realizes there is more to living than running and fighting the hordes. Ren has to come to her own conclusions about Finn in this book. Ren finally needs to admit that he is all she wants.

“But every person has a story. Every single one of us has a personal apocalypse, and that- that is the true cost of the disease.”

Ren and Finn’s romance has always been a complicated one and in this installment it’s no different. They both move and dodge the problem that’s between them. Ren doesn’t want to be a replacement Kelsey and Finn doesn’t want to lose another person. While it’s complicated I definitely love their romance. It’s a romance that is the result of the times and heartache they are living in. I don’t feel like everything came to a head for them. We finally moved past the ghost of Kelsey but we never got any time for them to actually acknowledge their feelings to each other. They barley acknowledge their feelings in their narration. I was hoping that we would get more from their relationship with this being their last book. But what we did get made me extremely happy. For most of the previous books I wasn’t really sure if Finn was only interested in Ren because of the resemblance to Kelsey but in this book we finally get the reassurance I have been looking for. Finn was always a great character but seeing his deadly and more vulnerable side toward Ren sealed the deal.

“She’s gorgeous and so fucking deadly. And mine. “How could you not?” I ask. “He looks at Park the way I look at you.” Her eyes go wide, and for a moment, I think she’ll respond. That everything between us will finally be acknowledged. We hear the gunfire first.”

This installment in the story was just as action packed as the others. Finn and Ren are in the most dangerous part of the United States and what they find there they never expected. Survivors never left the East and they don’t want more people to cross that invisible line. The zombies are finally dormant and the survivors are willing to do anything to make sure that they stay that way. There were so many new things being introduced that I had a hard time letting go. There were parts of this story that I wish we had spent more time in. Some parts felt rushed and not completely flushed out. We met new people that I would have liked to get to know more as well for so many reasons. The first three books focused on the action, violence, and even the politics of this world and this last installment was different. We got the action, and even the violence, but we also got emotion and even more growth from the characters.

“Why do the important ones never realize it? He lives for you. And he keeps the peace between your people and ours. He is the reason Sylvia will help the West. And if you had died on that bridge, he would have too. Finn won’t exist long or well in this world without you.”

I loved this series and it is going to be hard to let it go. The characters are some of my favorites. Finn and Ren buried themselves in my heart and I don’t want to see them go. I still have so many questions and its kind of disappointing the way we are leaving their story. Nazarea Andrews said she might come back to this world but not Finn and Ren. I truly believe their story isn’t complete and I hope she changes her mind. The writing as always was flawless. There were so many feels my heart almost couldn’t take it. If you love apocalypse, survival, and zombies with emotions and tons of feels…this series is definitely for you.

Excerpt

It was raining on the day of Harold’s funeral. Everything was overcast, and just gloomy enough to drop a layer of grey on the city. “Appropriate weather,” said one sober news anchor the morning of the funeral, “to mourn the death of one of the biggest men of New York.”

It was appropriate, and it worked wonders for the mood, but it did nothing good for Cedar’s hair.
She had her makeup artist come over early in the morning, and helped her with a face that said “I’m mourning the loss of a person very dear to me, but I look fabulous while doing it”. Her outfit was going to be reported in every major newspaper in the country, because that’s who she was. And so she dressed appropriately. And had memorized the eulogy she was going to give, which was mostly lies. But nobody really cared. The funeral wasn’t actually a place for people to mourn the death of
Harold Feingold. The funeral was a place for people to reassure themselves of their importance and their place in society. Not just anyone was invited to Harold Feingold’s funeral, because not everyone was worthy. The journalists had a separate corded area to watch and observe but to never forget for even a second that they were never going to be good enough to actually be invited to anything like this. Cedar had made sure only the reporters she approved of were coming to the funeral, and the rest of the paparazzi were located behind a line of the best security guards money could get.

It wasn’t just a funeral. It was an event.

And even though nobody attending the funeral would ever admit to it, going to Harold Feingold’s funeral was the same as going to a showing at the Gallery. It wasn’t for the reason they said they were going, and even if it was something they normally wouldn’t have ever done, they were more than happy to go. Get dressed in an outfit that people wouldn’t forget, mingle with the right people, and glory in where you were in life.

If you had to buy an extraordinarily expensive piece of art or cry a few tears, well, that was the price of admission for these kinds of things.

The casket was there when Cedar made her way into the church, followed by the insistent flashes of the paparazzi, silently clamoring for the best angle of her. Cedar Reynolds was a commodity, and even the paparazzi knew that. So, she wasn’t an actress or a singer, or anything else like that, and even though she wasn’t a Rockefeller or Astor or Thames, she was Cedar Reynolds, and everything she touched turned to gold. They all knew she wasn’t to be trifled with, and none of them had the guts to even try. They knew what happened to those who did, and none of them wanted to go down that road.

Cedar had made sure to have the photographers positioned to get everyone’s best side and angle, and after she discretely posed for the pictures on the way into the church. Harold wasn’t Christian, but there was something about the Thames-Harrison Church that felt like it was the best place for him to be eulogized.

It was the most exclusive church in the city, and nobody could just come to the church, let alone throw a last minute funeral. But Harold was Harold and Cedar was Cedar, and the church was more than happy to offer the building for the occasion.

Stained glass windows filtered in murky light, lending the whole building a feeling of slight gloom. Candles flickered, and it seemed like the building itself was mourning the loss of Harold Feingold.

Cedar walked slowly up the aisle of the church, toward where Harold’s body was lying in its casket. It was a closed casket funeral, because Harold did not believe in death, or dead people. He was cremated, because he didn’t believe in organ donation, either, but there was a casket, nonetheless.
It was something large to bury, because tossing ashes in the wind was crass and hippy, and Harold had been neither of those.

Cecil rushed up to Cedar. “Everything’s under control,” he said quietly. “The Mayor is running a little bit late because of traffic, but he’s supposed to get here soon.”

“He damn well better get here soon,” Cedar snapped. “Fuck traffic, he has a eulogy to deliver, and I will not delay the funeral because he decided not to leave early enough. Doesn’t he have a police escort or something?”

“I’m pretty sure that’s only the president,” Cecil said. “I’ll check.”

“You do that,” Cedar replied, and, remembering where she was, continued down the aisle in search of the preacher.

Cecil sighed and texted the Mayor’s secretary. Not on his private cell, where Cecil would send dirty texts, but on his official Mayoral phone. The things he did for Cedar, seriously. Going through the back door of the church instead of the front, and didn’t even get photographed by anyone. Which was a damn shame, because he had dressed to the nines today. He better get a serious bonus for this shit. He wouldn’t, though, because that wasn’t how Cedar worked. Which sucked, but on the other hand, he was probably one of the best paid personal assistants in the city. Cedar wasn’t necessarily nice to him, but she sure as hell paid enough to make up for it.

His phone buzzed. No police escort. Fuck, Cedar was going to rip off his balls.

Hades Teaser 3

Excerpt:

Her luxurious mink-brown wings were gone, sliced off in a brutal ceremony, and with them, her source of power. She totally understood why an Unfallen would cross the barrier between the human and demon realms to turn themselves into True Fallen and gain new wings and new powers. But was the evil upgrade worth it? Cat didn’t think so.

“Cat!” Azagoth’s voice startled her out of her thoughts, and she nearly dropped the tray of dirty dishes as she looked up to see him striding down the hallway from his office.

In the flickering light cast by the iron wall sconces, he didn’t look happy. He also wasn’t alone.

Hades, Azagoth’s second-in-command and the designated Jailor of the Dead, was walking next to him. No, not walking. With the way his thigh muscles flexed in those form-fitting black pants with every silent step, it was more like prowling. His body sang with barely-leashed power, and she shivered in primal, feminine response.

Son of a bitch, Hades was hot. Hard-cut cheekbones and a firm, square jaw gave him a rugged appearance that bordered on sinister, especially when paired with a blue Mohawk she’d kill to run her palm over.  But then, she’d kill to run her palms over all of him, and she’d start with his muscular chest, which was usually, temptingly, bare. Not that she’d complain about what he was wearing now, a sleeveless, color-shifting top that clung to his rock-hard abs.

She tried not to stare, but really, even if she’d stood in the middle of the hall with her tongue hanging out, it wouldn’t have mattered. He never looked her way. He never noticed her. She was nothing to him. Not even worth a glance. Those cold, ice-blue eyes looked right through her. And yet, this was a guy who laughed with Lilliana, pulled pranks on the other Unfallen who lived here, and played with hellhounds as if they were giant puppies. Giant, man-eating puppies.

Azagoth stopped in front of her. “Cat? You okay?”

She blinked, realized she’d been lost in a world of Hades. “Ah, yes. Sorry, sir. What is it?”
