REVIEW: Safe At Last (Slow Burn #3) By, Maya Banks

The third book in the beloved #1 bestselling author’s sexy, romantic suspense Slow Burn series…

They say young love doesn’t last, but a girl from the wrong side of the tracks with unique abilities and the hometown golden boy were determined to defy the odds. For Zack Covington, Anna-Grace—his “Gracie”—was the one. Until one night forever alters the course of their future, when a devastated Gracie disappears without a trace, leaving Zack to agonize over what happened to the girl he loved. As the years pass, his desperate efforts to find her uncovered nothing.

Now working for Devereaux Security, he stumbles across a painting featuring a special place only he and Gracie would know. The image is too perfectly rendered for it to be coincidence. His Gracie must be alive. When he finally tracks her down, he is shocked—and heart-broken—to discover the wounded shell of the girl he once knew and still loves. Her psychic gifts are gone, and worse, she believes he betrayed her all those years ago.

Zack has enemies, and once his weakness is discovered, Gracie becomes a target for revenge. He’ll have to save her before he can earn her trust and her love. And he vows they’ll never be torn apart again.

Review

I loved the first two Slow Burn novels and when I met Zack he immediately became one of my favorites from In His Keeping. In His Keeping is definitely my favorite book even after reading this novel but Zack is still definitely a bad ass sweetheart. There was so much to this book. There were secrets, betrayal, and definitely love. Maya Banks gave us a well written series and I definitely hope it continues.

“He’d been her best- and only- friend. The one she turned to for comfort. Love. Acceptance. The very best part of her very being, her heart, her soul. He’d been her confidant. The one person she trusted never to let her down, as so many had in her young life.”

Zack met the love of his life when he was in high school. He made every plan he ever had surrounding them together. When he left for college Gracie disappeared and was never heard from again. He has been searching for her for twelve years. For twelve years he has been living in heart break and just when he is ready to let her ghost go the unthinkable happens, he sees Gracie walks back into his life. Gracie has been through the ultimate betrayal. The love of her life did something so despicable she left home and never looked back. For twelve years she has been running from Zack and every memory of him because he took more than her trust with him, he also took her ability.

“Not just a part”, he said adamantly. “All of it, Gracie. My heart, soul, body and mind. I never gave to anybody what was yours to keep.”

Like I said before Zack has always been one of my favorite characters. He is sweet and caring to the people he cares about. Zack is also a complete badass. He fights for the people he loves and he never forgets. Zack is closed off to most people and when we see him finally open up to get Gracie back you fall even more in love with him. I really felt for Gracie’s character. But I had some problems really liking her character. I don’t think it had anything to do with her as a character, it had more to do with I loved Zack so much I couldn’t believe that she believed he had anything to do with it. Even though she had been through something terrible, she was still relatively strong about it. Even though she ran she was still living and she pursued her dream, which definitely won points.

“I’ll never ask for another thing as long as I live,” he said in a hoarse voice. “All I ever wanted was you.”

If you have ever read any of the Slow Burn series you know that there is this group that has been after them for a while and they are back. Now Zack has to protect Gracie from them even when she is terrified to be in the same room as him. This story line definitely had action but it was also the most heartbreaking of the three. Zack and Gracie definitely had some lies and a huge amount of betrayal to get through. We get to see some of our favorite characters come back and we get to see the women stand up and kick some serious ass. There were so many great things about this book. The writing was as well done as always. The romance was there and Zack ended up being so much more than we ever knew. I loved this series and I hope it continues. I definitely think that everyone who loves romance with a little something extra thrown in there should pick up these books.
