REVIEW: Picking up the Pieces (Picking up the Pieces #1) By, Jessica Prince

After having her heart broken by the only man she’s ever loved everything seemed to go downhill for Emerson Grace. It has taken eight years but Emmy is finally starting to pick up the pieces of her damaged life. But the man who destroyed it has returned bringing with him the pain of the past. Can she let go of the pain Luke caused and accept him back into her life or will the memories be too much for her to overcome?

Running from Emmy was the only way Lucas Allen knew he could protect her from the demons he carried with him. After spending one perfect night together Luke takes off, certain that he can’t possibly give Emmy everything she deserves. Now he’s made the decision to return to Cloverleaf and make things right. But is he prepared to truly face all of the damaged he has caused?

Will Luke and Emmy finally get their chance at love or will the secrets of the past stop them before they even get to begin?

Picking up the Pieces had me hooked from the very first word I read. This story of lost love found was an amazing read. I loved every minute of the journey I went on with Lucas and Emerson. The story unfolded switching between the past and the present as well as switching POV’s with Lucas and Emmy.

“You’re mine, Em. You became mine when you gave yourself to me eight years ago, and you’ve been mine every day since. I will not lose you again. I’m going to get you to forgive me and I will earn your trust back. No matter how long it takes.”

Emmy and Luke have been best friends since Luke moved in next door. Both have been afraid of what happens if they take their relationship past that so neither of them every tried. Until Luke joins the Marines. One night Emmy lays her heart on the line and gives her whole self to Luke. The next morning she wakes up and he is gone. That will be the last time she sees him again. And he took her heart with him.

“You’re mine, Emmy, and I’m not letting you go this time.”

Emerson has finally moved on. For eight years she has been trying to move on from the one man she has ever loved leaving her and then every heartbreak that came after that. She has finally left her dark place only for Luke to walk back into her diner. Now Emmy has to try and figure out how to live in the same town as the man who ruined her life all those years ago. Emmy is still angry. Her character has been through so much I don’t really blame her. She went through her dark time and now all of her friends are on the watch for her to go there again. Emmy’s character is a strong one. To go through such a dark couple years and be able to pull herself out of it was impressive. Emmy really made Lucas work for it too. She was an independent strong sassy heroine that you couldn’t help but love.

“You’re the strongest man I know, Lucas. You fight for her. That girl became your other half the day we moved in this house. She’ll be your other half till the day you die, and you’ll be hers. You get her back, and y’all can finally start living your lives whole.”

Lucas grew up in a home with an alcoholic mother and an abusive father. The only person who was ever there for him was Emmy. She was his rock until he left for the Marines and cut all ties. Lucas didn’t want to break Emmy like his father broke his mother. That decision will end up being one he regrets for eight long years. Now he has come back to his home town. Back to get the only woman he has ever loved back. Lucas was such a special character. No matter what he did he was such a sweetheart. He comes back with the intention of getting Emmy back and he doesn’t let her run. He knows he made a mistake and he takes ownership of it. Luke was alpha male swoon worthy too. I fell in love with him while reading his chapters.

“I don’t care if you can’t stand the sight of me. I don’t care if you hate me until the day you die. I’ll always be your Luke.”

Both Emmy and Luke had a relationship that was always meant to be no matter how either of them fought it. Both of them had things to work through and forgive each other for before their relationship could move forward. The two of them had some amazing friends as well. I freaking loved Savannah. She was great. She had a temper and her interactions with Luke were hilarious. I can’t wait to hear more about all of them. They are loyal and totally loveable.

“Gabbing hold of his hair tightly, I lifted up onto the balls of my feet to intensify the kiss. “I’ll love you forever, too, Luke.”

Jessica created a story of fighting for the love you almost lost. This heartbreakingly beautiful shows you that when you meet your soul mate you have to fight for them. No matter what. Picking up the Pieces was well written and the flow worked really well. Jessica’s transition between the past and present worked well. She worked the past chapters into the story at the right moments to give us more insight into the story. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
