EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT: Shattered Duty By, Katie Reus

Shattered Duty Synopsis:

A new novel from the author of Bound to Danger who “has the amazing ability of pulling the reader onto the front lines of the action and drama.” (The Reading CafĂ©)

When his wife was murdered two years ago, Special Agent Levi Lazaro turned his back on everything he cared about. Ever since, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. Now he's finally uncovered the identities of those who killed his wife—and he's ready to destroy them at any cost.
He won’t let anything stand in his way—not even a beautiful NSA agent on a mission of her own.

Special Agent Selene Wolfe prides herself on being the best. Her fearlessness and quick-thinking make her the perfect person to take down a deadly terrorist cell. But she needs Levi’s help, and the moment he shows up, Selene knows her objectivity—and her heart—are in trouble.

As the two strike an uneasy alliance, Levi finds himself tormented by his desire for Selene—a feeling he thought long dead. But when their mission takes an unexpected turn, he finds himself at a crossroads. Can he put aside his need for revenge to save the woman who’s reawakened his soul?

Excerpt

Selene knew Levi would come after her. He’d be stupid not to. She needed to somehow gain the upper hand and regain her composure. He might not even be able to tell she was ruffled but right now her heart was racing out of control. He shouldn’t know that she worked for Wesley. Obviously it was because of her cover ID, but no one was supposed to know that that ID wasn’t legit. She’d contemplated denying it, but if she needed him, she hadn’t wanted to start off with a lie. It would have set the wrong tone immediately.

That wasn’t the only reason she was off her game. It was the man himself affecting her. She’d seen his pictures before and once she’d seen him in person. But that had been different. She’d certainly never been attracted to him. Now . . . well, now she was very aware of him as a man. A very desirable one. It was beyond jarring because she hadn’t expected the attraction to him.

And he’d felt it too. She was sure of it. She’d been on the receiving end of a lot of appreciative male and female looks, but the way he’d stared at her had been so raw, so . . . primal. And he’d seemed angry as he’d watched her. But that was before they’d been introduced so she didn’t understand the anger part of his reaction. Unless he’d already known who she was.

Out of the corner of her eye she saw Alexander talking to the woman Levi had arrived with. Alexander had spotted them a few minutes before the other couple had gone outside and subtly tried to make his way to them—because he’d wanted to talk to the woman—and he’d told Selene the oddest thing about Levi. He hired escorts but didn’t sleep with them. The arms dealer had also made an offhand comment that Levi—whom Alexander knew as Isaiah Moore—had a meeting with the German tonight. That knowledge made all Selene’s alarm bells go off.

She’d barely taken three strides before Levi fell in step with her. Taking her by surprise, he placed his large hand at the small of her back. Even though she knew he meant nothing by it, it felt possessive. “Walk with me to the beach. We need privacy,” he said quietly, his voice a seductive whisper against her ear.

She knew he was trying to make it appear as if they were lovers looking for privacy. He wasn’t asking so much as ordering her and while she bristled at the command, she knew they needed to talk. She had questions and if she found out that Levi was interested in Tasev, then she had her orders to follow.

As they walked around the pool her heels clicked against the stone patio. The only thing she hated about getting dressed up was the footwear. Heels were impossible to run in and completely impractical. Give her boots any day. Or flip-flops. Also impractical but at least they were comfortable.

She spotted a half dozen guards in the shadows around Shah’s property as she and Levi made their way down the long stone walk to the private beach and dock. Shah had multiple boats including one worth over a million. And according to her file on him, he took it out only once a year. What a waste.

Instead of heading down the path that would take them to the beach, Levi guided her toward the dock. There weren’t any guards around here that she could see, but she was still cautious, scanning the water and secured boats. The dock spread out into a cross-shape with a couple of built-in benches.

Without waiting for him to tell her what to do, she sat on a bench and crossed her legs. As soon as she did, the split on the right side opened up, revealing skin all the way to her thigh. She’d used the sight of her body as a distraction before but she hadn’t meant to now. When his gaze raked over her, she felt as exposed as if she was sitting there naked.

REVIEW: American Savages (Ruthless People #3) By, J.J. McAvoy

“Villains by Choice."

Betrayed. Melody is nowhere to be found, Liam is in jail, and the Callahan family is cracking, just as Avian Doers, the FBI Director and puppet master behind their downfall, planned.

But just because they’re down doesn't mean they’re out. To fight back, Liam and Melody will have to put everything on the line. The kid gloves are coming off, and no one is getting out alive. Nothing will compare to the reign of terror that is about to envelope the entire country. First they were Ruthless, now they are pure Savages. The end is here, and no one is safe…

18+ Adults Only for violence and sex.

Review

“Clothes covered in red,
Eyelids sore and blue,
Never forget the ruthless
Because they won’t ever forget you.”

I have no idea how to start this review. I just finished the book and I am completely speechless. This book was like being on a roller coaster with a blindfold on. There were twists and turns that I never saw coming. I was completely consumed by the very first page of this book and I never wanted it to end. Warning if you haven’t read the first two books in this series, Ruthless People and The Untouchables, don’t even think about picking this one up yet. These are not standalones. Pick up the first two and even the prequel novella and marathon them. Get lost in this incredible ruthless world.

“Her scent had a different effect on me than it used to. She smelled of relief, yet at the same time, the possibility of drowning in the torrential rains that she’d brought with her lingered. Please do not let this be a dream.”

We immediately start with the chaos on Liam has been in jail for five months. His court date is in twenty days and Melody is still nowhere to be found. Liam still has faith that Melody will be back to fix the mess that he is but there is even more that needs to be taken care of when Liam gets out of jail. The whole country is about to feel the revenge of the Callahans, without ever knowing it was them.

“She didn’t own this place… I did. All I needed was three days in any jail. The first two days I burned it down, and the third day, I rebuilt it as I saw fit.”

I was so anxious when I started this book and it didn’t get any better with the way JJ McAvoy started this book. Liam is such a badass and ruthless character it was hard to see him doubt Melody. To have his life really in her hands was terrifying to me because of where she was in the last book. Liam has always been a favorite character of mine and I my love just skyrocketed to obsession. I absolutely loved him in this book. He was became even more determined, dangerous, and downright ruthless in this book. The best part though is that we got to see him vulnerable. We saw a side to Liam that was so different and those few moments made him even more vicious and unrelenting.

“She was beautiful, even covered in blood and sweat. It reminded me of when I first saw her.”

Even though many of the characters go through major transformations in this book I think Melody goes through the biggest one. Melody has been on the run and she starts out as the old Melody. The Melody that rains havoc all by herself, the woman who doesn’t need anyone. Then when she finally gets home she becomes a working mother. She is loving and sweet with Ethan but then she becomes Bloody Melody bringing down revenge to anyone who has hurt her. With the war that is coming Melody learns how to tell Liam she loves him. She learns the importance of Liam knowing how much she loves him. Melody Callahan is definitely going down as one of my favorite female leads ever.

“Leaning over, she kissed me deeply and we stared at each other. I smiled into the kiss before she broke away. “I love you too.” I never got tired of hearing that.”

Melody and Liam have always had explosive chemistry. Even in the beginning when they weren’t sure if they even liked each other. I didn’t think it could get any more explosive until American Savages. They fought, bled, and loved each other more than they ever had in this book. They grew into leaders that thought before they brought the chaos. They brought plenty but they were smarter about it. They learned to wait until the last moment. The learned how to control their vicious chaos. Melody and Liam were finally reunited and we got to see them mix their priorities. They now had a little one they had to take care of and that was great to see. For everything they went through in this book they actually were great parents.

Two
I’m not the fucking emotional one in this relationship.” I smiled at him.
One.
“I love you, Melody Nicci Giovanni-Callahan.”
And we pulled the trigger.”

One of the great things we got to see was the other members of the Callahan family. Declan and Coraline have grown back into the couple that they were when they first met. Definitely pick up their novella. Coraline definitely became the wife that Declan always wanted and the friend that Melody always needed. Coraline was definitely my favorite side character. She was able to help the family and she never wanted more power than she had. She always knew the importance of helping the family and keeping it whole. Declan is also a great character. He was Liam’s best friend and brother. The only person Liam trusted even a little bit. Then we have Neal. We watched Neal got broken. He was completely broken by then end of this book but there was also the hope that he wouldn’t always be broken. I have always hated Olivia and believe me she gets what’s coming to her.

“Oh and by the way, Icarus burned because he flew during the day. He wanted the world to see. We fly in the darkness, where people are afraid to look.”

If you didn’t think this book was going to be about complete and utter devastation and revenge you were mistaken. To stay alive both Melody and Liam are going to have to burn everything to the ground. They have to be more ruthless and cold hearted then they have ever been. They also need to be smarter that they have ever been. This book was written so well. JJ McAvoy was a completely genius with the way she set this book up. There were so many ups and downs I wasn’t sure if I wanted to throw my kindle or jump for joy. The book sucked you in and consumed you form the inside out before it let you go. There was no stopping. There was no time for you to take a breath. This book was fast paced and definitely bloody.

“You won’t bow down to me outside of this room, but I swear that tonight I will watch you tremble underneath me….. That way we won’t be separated again, because when I’m done, you’ll need it every day for the rest of your life. I’m going to make sure you are only addicted to me in both pleasure and pain. Any questions?”

My one and only problem with this book is the epilogue. In the beginning the dedication says that this is goodbye and with that epilogue I was left with more questions. It wasn’t an ending to me. I want something for Neal and I want something for Melody and Liam after that scene. Maybe it’s because I am not ready to let them go but either way I feel like the epilogue was a transition into different stage in their life. One that I want to read about. Not necessarily their end. I NEED MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book was great and definitely worth a read. Buy all four books, read them and get lost in Chicago with the ruthless Callahan family. I am about to go and read them again…love me some Liam.

Review

The Hidden Library is the second book in the Collectors’ Society series. The first book was action packed and full of adventure and this book just takes all of that up a notch. Heather Lyons created an amazing sequel and I can’t wait for more from this author.

This book picks up right where we left off with the rest of the Collectors’ Society crew. We get to follow Alice and Finn in their latest adventures. Following around literary characters that are truly alive and well. These literary characters live are called timelines and some type of evil is trying to destroy these timelines. It is up to the Collectors’ Society to keep these characters and their timelines safe.

While this story was as interesting as the first I found the beginning was a little hard to get into. It didn’t immediately suck me in like the first one did. And that quickly changed. Once I get back into the story and the characters the story picked up for me. I love how this story is set up and written. It takes place in the twenty first century but it seems to be written like a historical fiction book. The writing is lyrical and flows really well. Heather Lyons created an intricate and captivating plot with dynamic characters.

My only real problem was with the romance. Alice is such a strong and amazing character that her personality seemed to completely overshadow the romance in the book. I didn’t really feel the bond between Alice and Finn. Plus it seems that there is someone else and that took away from it as well. Other than that I really enjoyed the whole story. There was a lot to like about this series and I can’t wait to continue with what this author has to offer.

Excerpt

I didn’t sleep at all that night. Neither did David. The conversation between us just seemed to unravel and expand into further levels of depth, and before I knew it, the sun was streaming through the window.

I told him things I had never told anyone. My fears, my insecurities. He was the only person I had ever felt completely, wholeheartedly comfortable with. It was like I could be myself, unconditionally, without judgment. It felt real. It felt right.

David propped his head up on his elbow and stared at me from the other end of the sofa. “You do know you’re beautiful, right?” David, who typically joked about everything, was being completely serious.

“Everyone in L.A. is beautiful,” I said.

“Yeah, but you have an edge. You have that feisty east coast attitude. And honestly…” He hesitated, clearing his throat. “If we weren’t in these circumstances, I’d be with you in a heartbeat.”

“Oh come on, Renee’s great,” I said, trying to bring my best friend back into the picture before I forgot about her altogether and did something stupid.

“She is. But she can be really critical. I bet you’d watch football with me on a Sunday and not roll your eyes.”

I would’ve done anything with him if it meant I could stare into those crazy brown eyes for one more second.

“I’m really glad I came over tonight,” he said in a low voice, changing the subject.

“I can’t tell you the last time I felt…” He closed his eyes. “I shouldn’t be saying this.”
He shouldn’t have. But I wanted him to.

There was a pause, and neither of us said anything. Something was changing. I could feel it. It was like an unstoppable force was pulling us together.

When I looked up, his eyes locked with mine, and my heart stopped. The look on his face was unfamiliar to me. He was usually so laid back and funny, but the intensity in his eyes felt like he was an entirely different person.

He inched his body closer and pressed his face toward mine, but I pulled back.

“David, I can’t,” I said. “Trust me, I’d love to, but…”

“But what?” he asked. “Don’t you feel this, between us? I know you feel it. I’ve felt it since the minute we met.”

“Of course I feel it,” I admitted. “But I love Renee, and I would never do that to her.”

“Okay, then we’ll wait,” he said. “We’ll wait until she breaks up with me. We’ll wait until she moves on. But… there’s something here Justine. You can’t argue that.” He looked straight into my eyes again. “Maybe we can’t act on it now, but someday.”

And then, as the sun came pouring through the window, I drifted off to sleep next to him.

Someday. I could live with that.
