REVIEW: American Savages (Ruthless People #3) By, J.J. McAvoy

“Villains by Choice."

Betrayed. Melody is nowhere to be found, Liam is in jail, and the Callahan family is cracking, just as Avian Doers, the FBI Director and puppet master behind their downfall, planned.

But just because they’re down doesn't mean they’re out. To fight back, Liam and Melody will have to put everything on the line. The kid gloves are coming off, and no one is getting out alive. Nothing will compare to the reign of terror that is about to envelope the entire country. First they were Ruthless, now they are pure Savages. The end is here, and no one is safe…

18+ Adults Only for violence and sex.

Review

“Clothes covered in red,
Eyelids sore and blue,
Never forget the ruthless
Because they won’t ever forget you.”

I have no idea how to start this review. I just finished the book and I am completely speechless. This book was like being on a roller coaster with a blindfold on. There were twists and turns that I never saw coming. I was completely consumed by the very first page of this book and I never wanted it to end. Warning if you haven’t read the first two books in this series, Ruthless People and The Untouchables, don’t even think about picking this one up yet. These are not standalones. Pick up the first two and even the prequel novella and marathon them. Get lost in this incredible ruthless world.

“Her scent had a different effect on me than it used to. She smelled of relief, yet at the same time, the possibility of drowning in the torrential rains that she’d brought with her lingered. Please do not let this be a dream.”

We immediately start with the chaos on Liam has been in jail for five months. His court date is in twenty days and Melody is still nowhere to be found. Liam still has faith that Melody will be back to fix the mess that he is but there is even more that needs to be taken care of when Liam gets out of jail. The whole country is about to feel the revenge of the Callahans, without ever knowing it was them.

“She didn’t own this place… I did. All I needed was three days in any jail. The first two days I burned it down, and the third day, I rebuilt it as I saw fit.”

I was so anxious when I started this book and it didn’t get any better with the way JJ McAvoy started this book. Liam is such a badass and ruthless character it was hard to see him doubt Melody. To have his life really in her hands was terrifying to me because of where she was in the last book. Liam has always been a favorite character of mine and I my love just skyrocketed to obsession. I absolutely loved him in this book. He was became even more determined, dangerous, and downright ruthless in this book. The best part though is that we got to see him vulnerable. We saw a side to Liam that was so different and those few moments made him even more vicious and unrelenting.

“She was beautiful, even covered in blood and sweat. It reminded me of when I first saw her.”

Even though many of the characters go through major transformations in this book I think Melody goes through the biggest one. Melody has been on the run and she starts out as the old Melody. The Melody that rains havoc all by herself, the woman who doesn’t need anyone. Then when she finally gets home she becomes a working mother. She is loving and sweet with Ethan but then she becomes Bloody Melody bringing down revenge to anyone who has hurt her. With the war that is coming Melody learns how to tell Liam she loves him. She learns the importance of Liam knowing how much she loves him. Melody Callahan is definitely going down as one of my favorite female leads ever.

“Leaning over, she kissed me deeply and we stared at each other. I smiled into the kiss before she broke away. “I love you too.” I never got tired of hearing that.”

Melody and Liam have always had explosive chemistry. Even in the beginning when they weren’t sure if they even liked each other. I didn’t think it could get any more explosive until American Savages. They fought, bled, and loved each other more than they ever had in this book. They grew into leaders that thought before they brought the chaos. They brought plenty but they were smarter about it. They learned to wait until the last moment. The learned how to control their vicious chaos. Melody and Liam were finally reunited and we got to see them mix their priorities. They now had a little one they had to take care of and that was great to see. For everything they went through in this book they actually were great parents.

Two
I’m not the fucking emotional one in this relationship.” I smiled at him.
One.
“I love you, Melody Nicci Giovanni-Callahan.”
And we pulled the trigger.”

One of the great things we got to see was the other members of the Callahan family. Declan and Coraline have grown back into the couple that they were when they first met. Definitely pick up their novella. Coraline definitely became the wife that Declan always wanted and the friend that Melody always needed. Coraline was definitely my favorite side character. She was able to help the family and she never wanted more power than she had. She always knew the importance of helping the family and keeping it whole. Declan is also a great character. He was Liam’s best friend and brother. The only person Liam trusted even a little bit. Then we have Neal. We watched Neal got broken. He was completely broken by then end of this book but there was also the hope that he wouldn’t always be broken. I have always hated Olivia and believe me she gets what’s coming to her.

“Oh and by the way, Icarus burned because he flew during the day. He wanted the world to see. We fly in the darkness, where people are afraid to look.”

If you didn’t think this book was going to be about complete and utter devastation and revenge you were mistaken. To stay alive both Melody and Liam are going to have to burn everything to the ground. They have to be more ruthless and cold hearted then they have ever been. They also need to be smarter that they have ever been. This book was written so well. JJ McAvoy was a completely genius with the way she set this book up. There were so many ups and downs I wasn’t sure if I wanted to throw my kindle or jump for joy. The book sucked you in and consumed you form the inside out before it let you go. There was no stopping. There was no time for you to take a breath. This book was fast paced and definitely bloody.

“You won’t bow down to me outside of this room, but I swear that tonight I will watch you tremble underneath me….. That way we won’t be separated again, because when I’m done, you’ll need it every day for the rest of your life. I’m going to make sure you are only addicted to me in both pleasure and pain. Any questions?”

My one and only problem with this book is the epilogue. In the beginning the dedication says that this is goodbye and with that epilogue I was left with more questions. It wasn’t an ending to me. I want something for Neal and I want something for Melody and Liam after that scene. Maybe it’s because I am not ready to let them go but either way I feel like the epilogue was a transition into different stage in their life. One that I want to read about. Not necessarily their end. I NEED MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book was great and definitely worth a read. Buy all four books, read them and get lost in Chicago with the ruthless Callahan family. I am about to go and read them again…love me some Liam.
