When I first downloaded this book to my kindle I was hesitant to actually read it. Because of TV shows and movies zombies are ridiculously popular. For some reason I have been unable to find many zombie books that I have actually enjoyed. So this one went to the end of my TBR list, until I joined a read-along blog tour. I could freaking kick myself. This book was amazing and I completely fell in love with everything about it. Nazarea creates a world for us that is so real and plausible that it actually scares me a little.

“I was with my parents-my father and his best friend sat side by side, watching on a tiny monitor as the horde from Atlanta slammed into the troops from Fort Benning and everything- every fucking thing we’ve ever known or would know-stopped.”

Ren is a First. She was born the day that the world ended and the zombies started the battle for the east. Ren lives in one of the “Havens” with her brother, Collin, waiting for her turn to walk to wall. When the Haven that Ren lives in is overtaken by a horde Ren, Collin, Dustin, and Finn leave the safety of the haven and go into the Wide Open. Dustin, Ren’s boyfriend, catches an infection and now Ren and Finn, Collin’s best friend, leave their safe house to get the antibiotics that Dustin needs to stay alive. Only Ren would rather face a horde then ever be alone with Finn O’Malley.

“Day One is the day our whole world changed. But it’s also the day a girl was born. A girl who deserves to be known for more than just being a first” I gasp, and his hand drops away, leaving a searing heat in its wake. “I see that girl.”

Ren is a badass. She might have her moments of weakness or moments were she is scared but she won’t let anyone see them. She is willing to fight for the people she loves whether she does it alone or with someone else. Ren stands up to a person that most people cower from. She lives in a world where you are most likely to be killed for being a First and she does it well. This journey her and Finn are going on is going to be the first time she actually sees the world without Dustin and Collin keeping her in a protective bubble. And she won’t back down. She is a heroine that you can read and not be like grow up, stop crying, and fight.

“It’s the seventh of March. The day the world stopped. It began, twenty years ago, in blood. It ended in death and smoke, fire and ash.”

Finn was alive before the world ended. He fought with the others at the beginning and now he just walks the wall. Protecting the haven, Collin, and his sister Ren. Finn is a mystery. He doesn’t let anyone in. But he can also kick some serious ass. He wants to forget his past and the only time he can is when he takes on a horde of zombies. Now he has to take Ren to get her boyfriend and her brother antibiotics that can save their lives.

“I hate questions. Despise them. Why don’t people get that questions are just a way to lie. The answers don’t mean anything-they aren’t earned, they’re given for nothing. How could they mean anything?”

I don’t really know how I feel about Finn. I read some reviews and they say there in romance in this book but I don’t see it. Yes, there is sexual tensions between the two of them but Finn is an ass. He doesn’t let anyone in, even Ren. But as I was reading this I could see why Nazarea would write Finn this way. I am not saying I know why she wrote him this way, because I don’t, but I can guess. Being soft gets you killed. This is what the world has turned Finn into. Someone who doesn’t trust, someone who doesn’t want friends, someone who is angry. I can tell that he cares for Ren maybe even loves her but it’s hard to see because there aren’t any tender moments. Not even small ones. There is the scorching tension but that doesn’t equal hidden love to me. He does protect Ren and Collin with everything he has though. He also shows Ren that she is strong and able to take anything and everything. I just wish I saw a different side of him. Oh and maybe learned more about him. Even in his chapters we didn’t get much.

“People thought, before the change, that zombies moaned. They don’t. A moan is the noise someone makes when they are dying, when they are broken. Zombies scream- because only a scream can convey the rage they feel, and the endless hunger.”

This is definitely everything that I could ever want in a zombie book. It is definitely a darker read that had many undertones. Nazarea really showed you to sides of a coin. The tale was brutal and sexy, violent and protective. This book really shows you what happens when hope sneaks into a world where you can’t have it and then you have to fight to keep it. Nazarea really created a story that was a page turner from start to finish. There was no use even trying to put this book down. This zombie filled world sucked you in and made you just as much a part of the story.

“Ren is the name of a little girl avoiding who she is. What she was born to. Nurrin-that’s the name of a woman who risks her life because she’s got more courage than sense and was born to epic times and deeds.”

The writing in this book was flawless. We got both Ren and Finn’s POV’s and I loved how she set it up. There are four parts and each part is told completely from each POV. It gave you a chance to see into who Finn is. How he thinks. We get to see Ren struggle with a world she never really knew. This book was completely amazing. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone and I can’t wait to read the next book. Especially with that cliff hanger.

“You can’t live in fear of the day the zombies batter down your door- that isn’t living. You live in spite of that day. You live because everything in our screwed-up world says we can’t and we shouldn’t and fuck them.” He looks around and shakes his head. “But this isn’t living. Hiding in a hole is just a slow way to die.”
