REVIEW: In His Keeping (Slow Burn #2) By, Maya Banks

#1 bestselling author Maya Banks continues her suspenseful and steamy Slow Burn trilogy with this second book-a twisting tale featuring a strong yet vulnerable heroine in danger and the sexy alpha hero who must save her.

Abandoned as a baby to a young wealthy couple and raised in a world of privilege, Arial has no hint of her past or who she belonged to. Her only link lies in the one thing that sets her apart from everyone else—telekinetic powers. Protected by her adoptive parents and hidden from the public to keep her gift secret, Ari is raised in the lap of luxury, and isolation. That is, until someone begins threatening her life.

Beau Devereaux is no stranger to the strange. As the head of Deveraux Security, he’s more than familiar with the realities of physic powers. So when a family friend approaches him about protecting his daughter, he’s more than ready to jump on board. What Beau isn’t prepared for is the extent of his attraction to his beautiful and powerful client. What began as a simple assignment, just another job, quickly turns personal as Beau discovers he’ll do anything at all to protect Ari. Even if it costs him his life.

Review
When I saw that this book was coming out I wasn’t sure if I was excited or not. The first book was kind of take it or leave it for me but I love Maya Banks’ writing. So I decided that I was going to give this series another chance to wow me and this book certainly did. I loved it so much more than the first one. It went beyond my expectations.

“She simply drew her head away and looked up at him as if he was her entire world. And damn it, he wanted to be. When all of this was over, he was going to pour out his entire goddamn heart…..He could only hope that when he did that she wouldn’t reject the only gifts he has to give her. His heart. His soul. His body. Himself.”

Arial was abandoned as a baby, left on a porch to be cared for by strangers. She doesn’t know that any of this has happened. She lives a life of luxury and isolation. She has a whole side of her that she hides to keep herself and her parent’s safe, until they are no longer safe. Arial is naïve and innocent. Throughout the book she really doesn’t know what she’s doing. She doesn’t make any of the stupid decisions she thinks about but she doesn’t have a real grasp on the bad parts of the world. Even though she is naïve and soft she fights fiercely for those she loves, even if the list is small. She has no regard for her own safety when it comes to her family. By the end of the book we get to watch her become someone who is strong and not afraid of her powers. Ari is a good person with an honest and trusting soul and she only becomes stronger. She gets to add badass to her description by the end.

“Forever,” he whispered into her mouth, the word swallowed up as she inhaled the scent, the taste, the feel of him surrounding her. “I want forever.”

Beau Devereaux is the head of Devereaux Securities after his brother moves more to the background to take care of his wife. When the women from the news walks in looking for help finding her parents he can’t say no. Beau knows that there is something about the Ari and soon realizes she is more than a regular client. She holds answers to his own past she doesn’t even know she has. When the relationship heats up he knows he will be willing to do anything for Ari, no matter what. Beau has always been the blunt brother. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything, he tells people what they need to hear and nothing more. He never tries to be cruel though. Beau can be intimidating and extremely protective. He was the perfect person for Ari. She was naïve but Beau has seen more of the horrors of the world and knows what can happen when bad things happen. I loved his character.

“I don’t want you to leave,”
“Why?”
“Because you’re mine,” he said simply”

I loved their relationship in this book. While there relationship was fast and the feelings that came were nowhere near a slow burn it fit the book. Maya Banks created two characters that fit each other like puzzle pieces. For some authors it’s hard to do something like that. Instant love, attraction, lust is hard to do right but Maya did it. I loved Beau and Ari’s interactions. While Ari bothered me on more than one occasion I grew to really like her. She came into her own and became someone who wasn’t afraid to want things outside of her parents bubble. I always liked Beau. He was alpha, domineering, and intimidating but you could definitely see the softer side he was hiding for the right woman. He was very protective and understanding of Ari and why she was desperate to get her parents back. Beau never let the what-ifs surrounding Ari’s father to cloud his judgment or his feelings for Ari.

“Her body ached for this man. Her soul ached for him. The touching of two hearts, two spirits, becoming one.”

If you have read any of Maya Bank’s previous books you know her writing is amazing. This book wasn’t any different. The book was action packed and filled with swoony romantic moments. It was a great blend between suspenseful and romantic. I loved the added psychic abilities piece to the story. It bound all of the characters together. If you have read the first book, Keep Me Safe, then you get to see more Ramie and Caleb. I have a hard time liking Caleb and it was no different in this book.

“Love? He fucking adored her. Worshipped the ground she fucking walked on. Love was a paltry, inadequate word to describe his feelings for Ari.”

Overall, In His Keeping, was a great suspenseful story that kept you hooked. Ari and Beau’s story was filled with questions, action, and love. I can’t wait to read the next in this series.
