We have the wonderful Shannyn Schroeder to talk about the Heroine in Her Best Shot ! So excited…..

Meet the Heroine (Layla Sharpe)
Her Best Shot by Shannyn Schroeder

Layla Sharpe is the heroine of my novella Her Best Shot. Writing Layla entailed a lot of firsts for me: she was my first novella heroine, she is my youngest heroine (so far), and she’s the first of my nerd heroines.

Layla is a self-described math geek. She goes to MIT and at the opening of the story, she has just been offered a job with the NSA. She wants to work as a cryptographer and the prospect of the job excites her. When she tells her friends about the job, they make plans to go on a spring break vacation together. Going against her nature, Layla is spontaneous and hits the road to drive to Texas. Unfortunately, her car breaks down in Georgia and she’s stuck.

One of the things I love most about Layla is that she’s unapologetically smart. She knows she’s intelligent and she never tries to hide it. In fact, she wears her nerd proudly. Her favorite T-shirts are all math geek related. For instance, when she meets the hero, Phin, she’s wearing a shirt that says, “Welcome to the Dork Side. We Have Pi.” Yes, Layla is a Star Wars girl.

Layla is also confident and sexy. When she meets Phin, he offers to teach her how to play pool. She flirts with him, but learns the game. Over the course of her week with Phin, she becomes a good player and she challenges Phin in every way.

Lest you think Layla is an annoyingly perfect heroine, she isn’t. For all her confidence, she suffers from anxiety attacks. When the reality of being out in the world with a real job hits her, she has a full on panic attack and she considers walking away from everything. She feels like a fraud because things have come easily for her. Although she’s worked hard to succeed, school was never difficult, so she’s afraid of what the real world holds. She sees Phin as her escape from the real world.

Phin tempts her in ways other guys never have, so she’s willing to follow his lead. In a moment of weakness and fear, she tells Phin she isn’t going back to her life.

When Phin pulls some immature stunts, she calls him on it. Although she’s hurt, she heads back to her life as planned. In her spare time, she becomes the best pool player she can to prove to herself (and maybe Phin) that she’s better than either of them thought.

With college graduation looming, three childhood friends vow to make spring break their last blast of pure fun. But at least one of them didn’t count on such incredible heat…

Layla Sharpe is definitely more math ninja than bikini babe, and her future has been calculated with razor precision. Convinced to let loose over spring break, Layla is finally ready to party—until her car breaks down halfway to her destination, leaving her stranded in Georgia with a mouthwateringly hot pool shark. She knows more than enough about angles to learn the game, but this week she wants him to appreciate her curves…

Phin Marks has never met a girl like Layla. She’s more Star Wars geek than seductress, and when he offers her a place to stay while her car is in the shop, he’s counting on the attraction between them to set the nights ablaze, no strings attached. But every moment he spends with Layla makes it harder to let her go. Can he persuade her to gamble in the most dangerous way possible…on forever?
