Messenger is a YA paranormal-ish time travel-ish novel. While
this novel was a bit predictable it is also really well written. There were
many aspects to love about this book that made up for some of the more
predicable parts. I was pulled into the sweet side of this story and that is
what kept me turning the pages.
I don’t mind a heroine that isn’t necessarily a bad ass. It
doesn’t bother me if she isn’t at the front of every battle but this heroine
took it to a whole new level. She came off as whiny and a bit of a scaredy cat.
She tends to let other people push her around. Especially her teacher. She did
fight very hard for the love of her life and that is what made her bearable.
When I read the synopsis I thought that this was going to be
a paranormal story built around the romance but I didn’t see much of the
romance. It was brought up later in the story so it seemed like more of an
afterthought. What we did get of the romance was sweet and romantic. Their
relationship was well written and I want to find out more. Hopefully the other
books in this series focus on more of the romance.
I loved the history in this book. I am a huge history buff.
Whether it’s ancient history or modern history I love to read about it. This
book was full of it which made me like the book even more. The setting and some
of the other additional characters.
Overall? This was an ok start to a series that could be
really great when we get further into the story.
