“Love at first sight might be fiction, but most fiction has a grain of truth in it, right?”

Chira Kelly thought she didn’t need anyone…until she met Ben.

Because of one ugly rumor, Chira lives as an outcast at her school. Which is fine with her, because she works better alone. Always has, always will. And at least she has her one and only true friend, Tasha.

When Tasha insists that they join a group to visit a possibly haunted abandoned old schoolhouse, she's wary, but joins her friend. Because of that decision, their lives are in jeopardy as a malevolent spirit targets the group. Tragedies and accidents pick them off one by one, and Chira finds herself drawn to the one person who can see the truth. But can he protect her?

My Thoughts…

“I watched for the owl with my Hogwarts letter to appear on my 10th birthday, but he never did.”

This was the first line in the book. I laughed out loud, hard. I mean who hasn’t been waiting for that owl to tap on their window or drop a letter in the mailbox. It just made the character that much more real for me. It made me immediately like Chira as a character.

When I first started this book I was expecting a light spooky read. I got the light read part. It was fairly quick and easy to read. That doesn’t mean the book wasn’t good. It was very good. I just didn’t get the spookiness that I was expecting. After Creeden set us up with the main character and how her life is she started with some of the twists and turns of the book.

Chira Kelley

Chira was a great main character. She was likeable and funny. She isn’t getting the best in life. Her stepdad is an ass her mother either doesn’t know or doesn’t do anything about it, and people at her school have started a rumor that has made her an outcast. She makes the best of her life. She has amazing grades and throws herself into sports.

She meets Ben and she is immediately drawn to him. She can feel a kindred spirit. Another person that feels like they don’t belong. Chira is being followed but she doesn’t know by who. She’s running from feelings that she doesn’t want or understand, her best friend is hurt, and now she has to deal with the “curse”. After everything she seems to stay pretty strong through the book. I liked her character.

“Either you’re my ‘paid’ bodyguard or my stalker. You choose.”

Ben Oscuro

Ben is the new kid in school. He wears brown contact lenses so that people don’t notice that his eyes are different. The only person he has shown is Chira. He feels like he can actually be himself around her even if he keeps her at arm’s length. He has been let down by his family and doesn’t want to feel the rejection from Chira. Ben has the gift of seeing “impressions” and possessions, the two different types of ghosts. He can also tell when someone is lying. Ben takes it upon himself to take care of Chira when someone starts following her. As this happens the romance grows.

I love the other characters Creeden introduces us to. Chira’s best friend is everything that Chira isn’t but she remains the outcast that she is with Chira. She is bubbly and boy crazy. It’s sad what happens to her but hopefully we can see more of her. In the beginning I wasn’t sure how I felt about Matt. I mean he was one of the people who treated Chira horribly but he grew on me. It was funny to see him hit on her in front of Ben and Chira just doesn’t care. She knows who her heart is with whether she admits it or not.

“He pulls his lips away but rests his forehead to mine. For a moment we just hold each other and breathe. His eyes are closed, but mine are open. For the first time ever the softness in his features takes control and he looks at peace.”

The romance in this book is subtle. They both feel drawn to each other but it takes them a while to be ok with loving someone else. Their love grows slowly through their time together. Even with Matt trying she knew, without admitting it, that Ben was the person she wanted. It was beautiful.

This story was great. I think that I was meant to be a detective. I always know the twist and turns in movies, books, and TV. My husband hates it. I figured it out with this one but I don’t think it was obvious.  It was a fun read and I can’t wait to read the next one. I hope it still follows Ben, Chira, and Matt because they are fun to read about. Either way I am sure that I will read it!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In simple language, Pauline Creeden creates worlds that are both familiar and strange, often pulling the veil between dimensions. She becomes the main character in each of her stories, and because she has ADD, she will get bored if she pretends to be one person for too long. Pauline is a horse trainer from Virginia, but writing is her therapy.
