REVIEW: Gathering Frost (Once Upon a Curse #1) By, Kaitlyn Davis

Will his kiss be enough to revive her frozen heart?

Once Upon A Time meets La Femme Nikita in GATHERING FROST, a dystopian romance from bestselling author Kaitlyn Davis that reimagines the classic fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty.

Jade was only a little girl when the earthquake struck. Before her eyes, half of New York City disappeared, replaced by a village that seemed torn out of a storybook. Horses and carriages. Cobblestone streets. A towering castle. And, above all, a queen with the magical ability to strip emotions away.

Ten years later and Jade has forgotten what it is to feel, to care...even to love. Working as a member of the queen's guard, she spends most of her time on the city wall staring at the crumbling skyscrapers of old New York. But everything changes when the queen's runaway son, Prince Asher, returns. Jade is tasked with an unusual mission--to let the Prince capture her, to make him trust her, and then to betray his secrets to the crown. In return, she'll earn her freedom. But life outside the queen's realm is more than Jade bargained for. Under Asher's relentless taunts, her blood begins to boil. Under his piercing gaze, her heart begins to flutter. And the more her icy soul begins to thaw, the more Jade comes to question everything she's ever known--and, more importantly, whose side she's really on.

Review
I have to say that I have some of Kaitlyn Davis’ work on my kindle and I have yet to pick it up. After reading this book I will be moving Ignite to the top of my TBR. Gathering Frost is the first book in a new series and it happens to be retellings of Fairy Tales. I mean how much better can it get romance, magic, and fairy tales.

Jade was a pretty badass character. She was there when the magic tore apart her city and her world. Now she is stuck in the queen’s thrall. Completely frozen to all feelings except fear and dread. Those emotions keep them loyal, and make sure they obey. When the queen sends her to retrieve her runaway son Jade has no idea that this is going to change everything.

I really liked Jade’s character. She was raised to fight so she was pretty badass through the whole book. She has always had to prove that she is as good if not better than the boys that fill the Queen’s guard. Now she has the chance to prove herself. When she lets the Prince capture her she isn’t prepared to escape the Queen. I love that even though she was under the thrall she was rebelling in her own way. She never saw it that way but she filled her room with color and things from old New York. In her own quite way she had always been rebelling.

Prince Asher and Maddy were some other characters we got to know. They both were interesting and helped Jade feel again. They were able to look past Jade’s past and except her or who she is. Prince Asher was sweet and overly trusting. When you look at fairy tales it’s usually the princess that is naïve to the world and overly trusting. Kaitlyn Davis shook that up and made both of the characters vulnerable. I really liked how there was a touch of sleeping beauty but not much. The story was completely different and a like at the same time.

I was a little frustrated with the end. If the next book is a different couple I understand but I wish there was more of a closure for Asher and Jade. Kaitlyn kind of left the story open. If the next book is still from Jade’s POV I can understand but we will see. The plot had a nice pace and didn’t seem to drag in any areas. I was definitely invested the minute I started this story and I can’t wait to read more.
